A story rooted in Sutherland and Malabar
The history connected with Endeavour Rifle Club reaches back well before the club’s present form. Surviving public records point to strong historical links with Sutherland Rifle Club, long-range shooting at Malabar and a Sydney naval rifle organisation.
Some parts of that history are well documented. Others remain incomplete, and the precise succession of the earlier clubs into Endeavour is still being pieced together.

1915
Sutherland Rifle Club
A published history of Sutherland Rifle Club records the establishment of a .303-calibre rifle range at Sutherland in 1915. Approval was granted in June, with the range officially opened on 10 December 1915.
1930s
The move towards Malabar
By the 1930s, the Sutherland Rifle Club was reportedly doing most of its shooting at ANZAC Rifle Range at Malabar. Malabar would become increasingly important to the club’s story as the local Sutherland range passed out of use.
1959
A Queen’s Medal
The Sutherland club history records a Queen’s Medal in 1959, evidence of the club’s competitive success during the middle of the twentieth century.
The identity of the medal winner has not yet been confirmed from the public records examined.
1967
ANZAC Rifle Range grows in importance
Malabar’s role in New South Wales target shooting grew further after the Liverpool ANZAC range closed in 1967. Heritage records state that NSW Rifle Association clubs transferred to the Malabar site following that closure.
1970s
The Sutherland name disappears
The published Sutherland history describes the club as successful from 1915 until sometime in the 1970s. After the Sutherland range was abandoned, the club continued using Malabar, but eventually ceased to exist under the Sutherland Rifle Club name.
The Endeavour Connection
An inherited club lineage
A secondary history of ANZAC Rifle Range identifies Endeavour Rifle Club with two earlier organisations: the Sydney Naval Rifle Establishment, dated 1946, and Sutherland Rifle Club.
This provides evidence that Endeavour carries forward an older shooting tradition at Malabar. However, the surviving public sources do not yet establish exactly when, or through what formal sequence, those earlier organisations became part of Endeavour Rifle Club.
History still being uncovered
The exact founding date of Endeavour Rifle Club under its present name has not yet been confirmed from primary historical records.
There is also a small dating discrepancy in the surviving sources. The Sutherland club history records its rifle range from 1915, while a secondary ANZAC Range history associates “Sutherland RC 1914” with Endeavour’s lineage.
Until original club, NSWRA or MDRA records establish the full succession, these details should be treated as part of an evolving historical record rather than settled fact.
